We have a Volunteering Programme that works across the organisation to develop meaningful volunteering opportunities that can support our volunteers to gain new skills and work confidence and at the same time enabling them to make a real difference by helping us expand our services to our customers who need help the most.
Optivo is experiencing particular ongoing issues with fly tipping and littering at certain estates which is costly to the business and has a negative social and environmental impact. We need measures in place to reduce this and maintain our estates at an acceptable standard. The volunteer will be instrumental in bringing about a behavioural change by actively engaging our residents in domestic and bulk waste recycling and educating them on recycling best practice.
This is a behavioural change project to influence residents to use resources efficiently and minimize general waste disposal. The role will consist of the collection of raw data as well as active engagement with tenants. The objective of the campaign is to provide information and support to residents on domestic waste and bulk recycling collections offered by their local council. The volunteer will conduct face-to-face promotion of the recycling system at two of our largest estates.
To knock on doors in pre-selected areas and engage with residents about the council’s curb side recycling services.
To encourage residents to participate and utilize the recycling services more.
To provide recycling containers and provisions requests if required.
Work to a scripted set of questions, use a worksheet to log each visit and provide regular feedback to their manager.
Discuss any problems they may be experiencing with their recycling and providing possible solutions. If required, discuss specific, relevant waste issues depending on what residents are finding challenging e.g. food waste, bulky waste.
Take a before and after image of the communal waste bins at the estates to establish whether we see a marked improvement
Note down which households demonstrate a particular problem with waste - they will require a visit from the council.
Leaflets will be handed out to accompany the conversation, not to replace it.
